Things In My Yard

Fantastivision

Intro

My wife and I recently bought a house in a rural-ish area, and the first thing we noticed was the number of spiders of all different size and shapes. Then we noticed many different ants and bugs of other types. When I noticed mushrooms growing in the yard of at least a half-dozen different colors, I decided to buy some field guides. Then I took some pictures and started this web page.

Trees

tree1
07/16/2006 This is a big tree in the middle of our yard.

tree2
07/16/2006 This is a big tree at the back of our yard. I believe it is a Norway Maple (Acer platanoides).

tree3
07/16/2006 This tree is just off our deck. I am fairly certain that it is an Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis).

tree4
07/16/2006 This tree is across our yard. I don't know precisely, but I'd say it's a Birch of some sort

tree5
07/16/2006 This tree stands in our garden area. I think it is one of the more interesting trees on our property, but I haven't identified it yet.

Mushrooms

07/16/2006 This mushroom dried up in the sun in the afternoon. I think it is a Yellowish-White Melanoleuca (Melanoleuca alboflavida).

07/16/2006 I'd say this one is a Granular Puffball (Arachnion album).

Insects & Spiders

We have a lot of spiders of different sizes and shapes, several types of ants and a bunch of other bugs big and small. We don't have a camera that would give a good in-focus picture of things this small, but I'll start with a list and try to work something out for pictures.
Little Black Ants 07/16/2006 Most of the ants I have seen are much bigger than this, but I came across a colony in the driveway.

Other

slug
07/16/2006 I was out looking for mushrooms and came across this exquisite slug.
